Hugh MacColl (1837-1909) was a mathematician and logician who was born, raised and educated in Scotland and who developed the greater part of his work in Boulogne-sur-Mer. MacColl’s philosophy is a kind of instrumentalism in logic which led him to set the basis of what might be considered to be the first pluralism in logic. This aspect of MacColl’s philosophy of language leads him to explore the possibilities of a formal system sensitive enough to capture the nuances and features of natural language. The result of these explorations are impressive: the use of restricted domains to render the formal counterpart of the grammatical notion of subject, the use of terms for individuals and individual concepts, the distinction between the negation of propositional formulae and the negation of predicates, the use of both a predicate for existence and a predicate for non-existence, the criticism of the paradoxes of material implication in the framework of modal logic and strict implication, many-valued logic, probability logic, relevant logic, connexive logic. |

first dialogical attempt towards belief revision. Le juriste et logicien Argentin Carlos Alchourron (1931-1996) a été l'une des figures les plus marquantes et influentes de la philosophie du droit et de la logique juridique des dernières décennies. Son travail couvre la philosophie du droit, la logique des normes, et la logique de la révision des croyances. Son livre Normative Systems (Wien, Springer, 1971), et son célèbre article "On the logic of theory change : contraction functions and their associated revision functions" (Journal of Symbolic Logic, 1985, Bd. 50, 510-530), écrit en collaboration avec Peter Gardenförs et David Mackinson et connu aujourd'hui comme "l'article AGM", a donné une impulsion décisive aux recherches situées aux confluents de la logique, de l'épistémologie et du droit, incluant les logiques de la non-monotonie, la théorie de l'argumentation, et la dynamique de la croyance.
